He built contacts with local publications and worked part-time in journalism while in college.

He served in the Soviet Army as a communication equipment security specialist from 1983 to 1985, after graduating from university.

Muratov and three other journalists co-founded the pro-democracy newspaper Novaya Gazeta in 1993.

From 1995 to 2017, he served as the newspaper’s editor-in-chief, a position he reclaimed in 2019.

The publication is known for covering difficult themes such government corruption, human rights violations, electoral fraud, police violence, and other power abuses.

He was a passionate champion for an independent press as editor-in-chief, and he published articles by Anna Politkovskaya that questioned Putin’s regime.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Muratov assisted in the creation of “Russia’s sole truly critical daily with national significance today.”

After receiving a second warning from Roskomnadzor, the daily announced on March 28, 2022 that it will halt its online and print operations.
