He played college football at Alabama, where he finished his senior year with over 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns. Smith received the Heisman Trophy, as well as several other awards and honors, for his achievements. He was only the fourth overall and the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard in 1991. He also won two national championships at Alabama before being drafted tenth overall by the Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Smith won the 2020 Heisman Trophy over finalists Kyle Trask, Trevor Lawrence, and teammate Mac Jones, becoming the first wide receiver to win the award since Desmond Howard in 1991 and only the fourth overall. In the CFP National Championship Game against Ohio State a few days later, despite leaving the game early in the third quarter due to a hand injury, Smith set records for title game catches (12) and touchdown receptions (three). He also finished with 215 yards. Smith was voted the Offensive MVP of the final game as Alabama prevailed 52-24 to win their sixth championship in 12 years.
