Aside from football, he lettered in baseball and played basketball for one year as a freshman. He was a member of two unbeaten teams. Both the Chicago Tribune and the Champaign-News Gazette named him a SuperPrep All-Midwest honoree and an All-State selection. In his senior year, he had 65 tackles (21 for loss) and 10 sacks.

The 34th-best defensive end in the nation and the 17th-best prospect in the state of Illinois, respectively, was Lowry. A number of universities, including Northwestern, Ball State, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Northern Illinois, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Western Michigan, extended scholarship offers to the three-star recruit. On June 7, 2011, he declared his commitment to Northwestern.
