American stand-up comedian, actor, and author David Norris Brenner lived from February 4, 1936, through March 15, 2014. Brenner “was a pioneer of observational comedy” and spent most of the 1970s and 1980s performing on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Brenner’s pal, comedian Richard Lewis, referred to him as “the king of hip, observant humor.”

Brenner produced or scripted 115 television documentaries before turning to humor. Additionally, he was in charge of Westinghouse Broadcasting and Metromedia’s documentaries divisions, where he received close to 30 awards, including an Emmy.

He gave his first paid performance at The Improv in June 1969. After that, he frequently made appearances in nightclubs in Greenwich Village.

Brenner served in the 101st Airborne and the 595th Signal Corps as a cryptographer in Böblingen, Germany, for two years after graduating from high school. He enrolled in Temple University after being released from the military, where he majored in public communication and received an honors degree.
