Goedert attended Britton-Hecla High School in Britton, South Dakota. In high school, he was a member of the Braves football, soccer, and basketball teams. His father, a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, named him after the team. Goedert was a walk-on for South Dakota State University from 2013 (he redshirted as a freshman) to 2017. During his career, he had 198 receptions for 2,988 yards and 21 touchdowns, including two consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
He started all 14 games as a senior and was a team captain, totaling 72 catches for 1,111 yards and seven touchdowns. Goedert was a two-time first-team FCS All-American during his collegiate career at South Dakota State, and he was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which recognizes the top player in the FCS, in 2016. Goedert accepted an invitation to the 2018 Senior Bowl at the end of the 2017 season. However, he was injured during practice and had to withdraw from the game.
Goedert took over as the Eagles’ starting tight end after Zach Ertz was traded in October. Goedert agreed to a four-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles on November 19, 2021. On January 3, 2022, he was placed on the COVID list. He was activated a week later, on January 10, and missed only one game in which the Eagles did not play their starters.
