The first episode of the show is set at the start of the zombie apocalypse when the red-handled machete was just one of many products on a shelf in a hardware shop. The young man protected himself from the walker by grabbing the machete from the rack.
Unfortunately, he was ignorant of the proper methods for killing a walker and instead of going for the monster’s head, stabbed his assailant in the stomach.
However, when the cabinets eventually ran out, David was forced to take the girls into the walker-infested wilds. As they were running, a walker grabbed Alyssa by the hair and ate her in front of her sister.
