Veloso was one of the seven children born into the family of José Telles Velloso (also known as Seu Zeca), a government worker, and Claudionor Viana Telles Velloso (also known as Dona Canô).
He was born in Santo Amaro da Purificaço in the Brazilian state of Bahia, but moved to Salvador, the state’s capital, as a college student in the middle of the 1960s.
Soon after, Veloso won a music competition, which led to the signing of his first record deal. Around this period, he collaborated on the creation of Tropicalismo with several other musicians and artists, including his sister Maria Bethânia.

When Caetano Veloso finished high school in the 1960s, he pursued a degree in philosophy at the Federal University of Bahia.
