Murphy participated in six games with six starts in 2017 after redshirting his freshman year at Washington in 2016. He missed seven games due to injury. He had 16 tackles and three interceptions before season’s end. In 2018, he came back to Washington and started. In the 2018 Pac-12 Football Championship Game, he made two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown of 66 yards. For these actions, he was given the MVP award. Murphy declared for the 2019 NFL Draft on January 7, 2019, saying he would sacrifice his last two years of eligibility.

Murphy attended Scottsdale, Arizona’s Saguaro High School. He was a wide receiver and cornerback. He had 52 tackles and seven interceptions on defense and 88 receptions for 1,733 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior. Murphy agreed to play collegiate football at the University of Washington.
