On July 19, 1962, Anthony Edwards was born into a multiethnic household in the city of Santa Barbara in the state of California.
His mother, Erika Kem (Weber), is a landscape painter and artist, and his father, Peter Edwards, is an architect. He is the youngest of five children and the son of his parents. His mother was of German origin, while his father had lineage from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, and Spanish-Mexican countries.

Edwards’ parents urged him to complete his education at a four-year university first before he proceed with acting and went on to study theater at the University of Southern California. However, by the time he was nineteen years old, he was getting enough acting work to allow him to drop out of school.
