Veloso was one of the seven children born into the family of Claudionor Viana Telles Veloso (also known as Dona Canô) and José Telles Velloso (also known as Seu Zeca), a government employee.
He was born in the Brazilian state of Bahia’s Santo Amaro da Purificaço, but as a college student in the mid-1960s, he relocated to Salvador, the state’s capital.
Veloso won a music competition shortly after that, which led to his signing with his first label. Along with several other musicians and artists, including his sister Maria Bethânia, he helped develop Tropicalismo around this time.
