Poitier was a Bahamian-American actor who featured in over 50 films, won an Oscar, and was a Hollywood trendsetter.
Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper responded to Poitier’s death by saying he was conflicted with deep grief and a sense of jubilation when he learnt of Sir Sidney Poitier’s demise.
He also said added,
“Sadness that he would no longer be here to tell him how much he meant to us, but joy that he accomplished so much to show the world that individuals from the most humble origins can change the world and that we gave him his flowers while he was with us”.
The death of the Acadamy Award laureate was announced by Bahamas Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell, according to Eyewitness News Bahamas.
He was 94 years old.
