Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, also known as Rolihlahla Mandela, was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who presided as South Africa’s first president from 1994 to 1999. He was born on July 18, 1918, in Johannesburg.

First elected in a fully representative democratic election, he served as the nation’s first black head of state. His administration put its efforts into promoting racial harmony in order to destroy the legacy of apartheid.
