Lata Mangeshkar was a playback singer and occasional music composer from India. She lived a fulfilling life from September 28, 1929, to February 6, 2022.

She is deservedly regarded as one of India’s greatest and most influential vocalists. Her contributions to the Indian music industry over an eight-decade career earned her titles such as Queen of Melody, Nightingale of India, and Voice of the Millennium.

When did Lata Mangeshkar lose her voice?

Mangeshkar is rumored to have lost her unique voice somewhere in 1963. According to Lata in an interview after the ordeal, doctors confirmed that she was being slowly poisoned for quite a while.

The poison took a toll on her voice and health. When she fully healed months after, she was never able to hit her trademark high notes any longer.

In an interview with the National Herald, she said, “We Mangeshkars don’t talk about it, as it was a terrible phase in our life. The year was 1963. I began to feel very weak, and could barely get up from my bed. It came to a point where I couldn’t move on my own.”
