Scottish politician Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon has been the SNP’s (Scottish National Party) leader and First Minister of Scotland since 2014.
She holds both positions for the first time as a woman.
What was Nicola Sturgeons maiden name?
On July 19, 1970, Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon was born at Irvine’s Ayrshire Central Hospital.
She is the oldest of three daughters born to Robin Sturgeon (born 1948), an electrician, and Joan Kerr Sturgeon, a dental nurse.
Her paternal grandmother came from Ryhope, which is now the City of Sunderland, and her family has some roots in North East England.
She was raised in Dreghorn and Prestwick.
Since 1999, she has served in the Scottish Parliament (MSP), initially as an additional representative for the Glasgow electoral region and, starting in 2007, as the representative for Glasgow Southside (formerly Glasgow Govan).
In the 2021 election for the Scottish Parliament, the SNP won 64 seats, gaining one seat, but falling one seat shy of a majority.
The Scottish Greens and Sturgeon’s administration later agreed on a power-sharing arrangement.
Sturgeon surpassed her predecessor, Alex Salmond, for the title of Scotland’s longest-serving First Minister on May 25, 2022.
