Mama Africa was the stage name of Zenzile Miriam Makeba , a South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights advocate. Makeba was an activist against apartheid and South Africa’s white minority rule and was associated with musical genres such Afropop, jazz, and world music.
When Makeba was abroad, the US authorities withdrew her visa, forcing her and Carmichael to move to Guinea. Makeba kept on performing, mainly in African nations and during various independence days. Makeba started to produce and perform music that was more overtly critical of apartheid; her ex-husband Hugh Masekela’s song “Soweto Blues” from 1977 was about the Soweto rebellion. Makeba returned to South Africa in 1990, the year apartheid was abolished.
Makeba kept on performing and recording, and she even collaborated on an album in 1991 with Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie. Makeba even starred in the 1992 movie Sarafina! Makeba advocated for humanitarian problems after being elected an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 1999. Makeba passed away from a heart attack while performing in Italy in 2008.
