Salsa musician from Puerto Rico, Héctor Juan Pérez Martnez, better known by his stage name Héctor Lavoe, lived from 30 September 1946 to 29 June 1993.

Lavoe is considered possibly the best and most important vocalist and interpreter in the history of salsa music since he helped this musical genre gain popularity in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Due to his charm, flare, and vocal prowess, he had a very successful artistic career in the 1970s and 1980s in all genres of Latin music and salsa.

He was able to sing along, fast phrases with total naturalness, and he developed perfect diction, which helped him become one of the Latin public’s favorite singers.

Lavoe grew up in the Machuelo Abajo district of Ponce, Puerto Rico. While he was a student at Escuela Libre de Msica de Ponce, now known as the Instituto de Msica Juan Morel Campos, Jess Sánchez Erazo ignited his passion for music.
