De La Soul is an American hip-hop group that was founded in the Amityville neighbourhood of Long Island, New York, in 1988.

They are most well-known for their unusual lyrics, varied sampling, and contributions to the development of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop subgenres. Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo created the group while still in high school, and a demo tape of their song “Plug Tunin'” helped producer Prince Paul take notice. The band’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, has been hailed as “a hip-hop classic” for its inventive sampling, amusing wordplay, and humorous skits.

Despite garnering great accolades from reviewers, the album was the band’s best commercial success to date, with succeeding albums selling progressively less. They are an integral member of the Spitkicker collective and played a significant role in the early years of rapper and actor Mos Def’s career.

After the Jungle Brothers, they have the second-longest history among Native Tongues bands. The group’s work with Gorillaz on the song “Feel Good Inc.” earned them a Grammy in 2006.

They stated at the beginning of 2015 that their ninth studio album, And the Anonymous Nobody…, which was financed via Kickstarter, would be published in September of that year. It was released on August 26, 2016. According to rumours, the album’s songs were created during several spontaneous jam sessions. Additionally, the album includes cameos from musicians including Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, David Byrne, 2 Chainz, and Snoop Dogg.
