Agnès Varda died from breast cancer, Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumors.  Her films focused on achieving documentary realism, addressing women’s issues, and other social commentary, with a distinctive experimental style.

Her death drew a passionate response from the filmmaking community with Martin Scorsese releasing a statement, “I seriously doubt that Agnès Varda ever followed in anyone else’s footsteps, in any corner of her life or art.

Varda’s work employed location shooting in an era when the limitations of sound technology made it easier and more common to film indoors, with constructed sets and painted backdrops of landscapes, rather than outdoors, on location.

Agnès Varda was buried at Montparnasse Cemetery on 2 April. Among those who attended her funeral were Catherine Deneuve, Julie Gayet, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jane Birkin, and Sandrine Bonnaire.
