Sandra Day was born in El Paso, She grew up on a 198,000-acre family cattle ranch near Duncan, Arizona. The ranch was nine miles from the nearest paved road. Sandra Day was a baptized member of the Episcopal Church.

A moderate conservative, O’Connor was known for her precisely researched opinions. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan, she was considered a swing vote for the Rehnquist Court and the first four months of the Roberts Court.

O’Connor most frequently sided with the Court’s conservative bloc but demonstrated an ability to side with the Court’s liberal members. She often wrote concurring opinions that sought to limit the reach of the majority holding.

On December 1, 2023, O’Connor died in Phoenix at the age of 93, due to complications related to advanced dementia and a respiratory illness. After her death, Chief Justice John Roberts called her “an eloquent advocate for civil education” and a “fiercely independent defender of the rule of law” in a public statement.
