Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee (born March 20, 1957) is a filmmaker and actor from the United States. Lee’s work has consistently addressed race relations, black community difficulties, the role of media in contemporary life, urban crime and poverty, and other political topics.

He has earned an Academy Award, a Student Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Award, and two Peabody Awards for his work. He has also received an Honorary BAFTA Award in 2002, an Honorary César Award in 2003, an Academy Honorary Award in 2019, a Gala Tribute from the Film Society of Lincoln Centre, and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.

Jackson, Shelton Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Jacqueline Carroll (Shelton), an art and black literature teacher, and jazz pianist and composer William James Edward Lee III.

Lee has three younger siblings, Joie, David, and Cinqué, all of whom have appeared in various roles in Lee’s films; a fourth, Christopher, passed away in 2014.

His cousin is director Malcolm D. Lee. His family relocated from Atlanta to Brooklyn, New York when he was a child. His mother dubbed him “Spike” when he was a child. He went to John Dewey High School in Brooklyn’s Gravesend district.
