As a co-founder of Miramax Films, Harvey Weinstein is a well-known American film producer and studio head.
Weinstein was raised in a Jewish family in New York City after being born on March 19, 1952, in Flushing, New York. After finishing high school, he enrolled at SUNY-Buffalo for college.
Together with his brother Bob, Harvey founded a tiny independent film distribution business called Miramax in the late 1970s. Miramax was named after their parents, Miriam and Max. The company’s initial releases were mainly concert movies focused on music, such as Paul McCartney’s Rockshow.
The Weinsteins gradually expanded on this accomplishment during the 1980s with indie films that garnered both critical acclaim and modest box office success. The Thin Blue Line, a documentary by Errol Morris about Randall Adams, a man on death row after being falsely convicted, brought Harvey Weinstein and Miramax to the notice of a larger audience in 1988.
