The Mexican actor and star of “The Lincoln Lawyer,” which premieres Friday on Netflix, spent his childhood summers at his family’s ranch in Jalisco, where his grandfather, a film enthusiast and aspiring director, would show his grandchildren westerns he had shot on his 16 mm camera when they were young.

Garcia-Rulfo, who is currently 41, sees the machine as a symbol of his family’s storytelling heritage.

With Bless Me, Ultima, Garcia-Rulfo played Uncle Pedro in his first significant American picture. He portrayed the bandit Vasquez, one of the title characters, in the 2016 remake film The Magnificent Seven.

Although he said that it was challenging, he developed blisters from the pistol training for the role even if he felt it was humorous. In 2017, he co-starred in Kenneth Branagh’s production of Murder on the Orient Express as Biniamino Marquez, a role that was tailored for him and originally appeared in the book as Antonio Foscarelli.
