Quentin Jerome Tarantino is an American director, film critic, author, and actor born on March 27, 1963. His movies are known for their repeated allusions to popular culture and film genres, non-linear plots, grim humor, stylized violence, lengthy dialogue, widespread use of foul language, cameos, and ensemble casts. Other stylistic elements of his direction include music from the 1960s and 1970s, fictional brand parodies, and shots of naked women. Tarantino’s career as an independent filmmaker began in 1992 with the release of the crime film Reservoir Dogs. Pulp Fiction (1994), a dark comedy crime thriller, was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards, including the Palme d’Or and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 1996, he starred in From Dusk Till Dawn, for which he also wrote the screenplay. Jackie Brown (1997), Tarantino’s third film, paid homage to blaxploitation films.
Tarantino directed Kill Bill: Volume 1 in 2003, inspired by martial arts film traditions; Volume 2 followed in 2004. He then directed the exploitation slasher Death Proof (2007) as part of a double feature with Robert Rodriguez titled Grindhouse. With the war film genre, his next film, Inglourious Basterds (2009), told an alternate history. Following that, he wrote and directed Django Unchained (2012), a slave revenge Spaghetti Western that earned him his second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Hateful Eight (2015), Tarantino’s eighth film, was a revisionist Western thriller that debuted with a roadshow release. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), his most recent film, is a comedy-drama set in the late 1960s about the transition from Old Hollywood to New Hollywood. In 2021, he published his first novel, a novelization of the film. Tarantino’s work has been criticized for depictions of violence, frequent use of racial slurs, and the alleged negligence of safety in his handling of stunt scenes in Kill Bill: Volume 2.
