Van Morrison is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a seven-decade recording career.

George Ivan Morrison was born on August 31, 1945, at 125 Hyndford Street, Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland, as the only child of shipyard electrician George Morrison and singer and tap dancer Violet Stitt Morrison. The house’s previous occupant was the writer Lee Child’s father. Morrison’s family were working-class Protestants descended from Belfast’s Ulster Scots population.

Morrison’s solo career began in 1967, when the hit single “Brown Eyed Girl” was released. Following Berns’ death, Warner Bros. Records purchased Morrison’s contract and gave him three sessions to record Astral Weeks (1968). Despite being a slow seller at first, the album has since become regarded as a classic. Morrison established himself as a major artist with Moondance (1970), and he built on that reputation throughout the 1970s with a string of critically acclaimed albums and live performances.
