Helen Folasade Adu CBE, professionally known as Sade Adu, is a Nigerian-born British singer best known as the lead singer of her eponymous band. Helen Folasade Adu was born on January 16, 1959 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, but is originally from Ekiti State. Folasade, which means “honour earns the crown,” is her middle name. Sade’s parents are Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian economist of Yoruba descent, and Anne Hayes, an English district nurse; they met in London, married in 1955, and moved to Nigeria.

Sade’s solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator” piqued the interest of record labels, and Sade and Matthewman left Pride in 1983 to form Sade with keyboardist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and drummer Paul Cook.

Sade had become so popular by the time she performed her first show at London’s Heaven nightclub that 1,000 people were turned away at the door. Sade played their first US show at New York City’s Danceteria nightclub in May 1983. Sade Adu signed with Epic Records on October 18, 1983, while the rest of the band signed in 1984.
