Harvey and the band she founded with the bassist Stephen Vaughan and the drummer Robert Ellis were both referred to as PJ Harvey at first. Harvey’s most difficult album, Rid of Me (1993), was created under the engineering direction of Steve Albini (whose reputation as a sonic extremist was built on his bands, Big Black and Shellac, as well as his production of groups like the Pixies and Nirvana).

Later that year, 4-Track Demos, a softer rendition of some of the same material, was published. Ellis and Vaughan split up with PJ Harvey after the tour in support of these albums, and Harvey went solo.
