For these investigators, Michael was a mystery. Even at the age of 18, he continued to learn through association rather than direct knowledge. When Michael first arrived at Briarcrest, he had the chance to learn to read and absorb the information properly, but his cloak-and-dagger behavior prevented that. He had done his best to conceal his shortcomings by passing for intelligence in order to avoid being labeled as such. However, the examiners could tell he wasn’t stupid, and their suspicions were validated when they administered a new IQ test to him.

As a child, Michael Oher’s IQ test results indicated that he had a score of 80. His low performance was not viewed as a learning issue because he was assessed to be dumb with this IQ.
With his lack of intrinsic intelligence, he was doing about as well in his studies as was reasonable. Michael, however, scored between 100 and 110 on this new IQ test, indicating that he had ordinary intelligence. Of course, Oher is smart.
