Michael Jerome Oher is a former American football offensive tackle who spent eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Baltimore Ravens. Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee, as one of Denise Oher’s 12 children.

Oher also lettered in track and basketball twice. Oher averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior, helping lead the basketball team to a 27-6 record and the district championship. As a senior, Oher finished second in the state in the discus.
Oher’s low grades initially prevented him from being accepted into an NCAA program. By enrolling in some 10-day-long Internet-based courses from Brigham Young University, Oher was able to raise his 0.76 grade point average (GPA) to a 2.52 GPA by the end of his senior year, allowing him to attend a Division I school.
