Héctor Juan Pérez Martnez, known professionally as Héctor Lavoe, was a Puerto Rican salsa singer. Lavoe is regarded as the best and most influential singer and interpreter in the history of salsa music, having contributed to the genre’s popularity in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
Lavoe was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico’s Machuelo Abajo barrio. Early in Lavoe’s life, he attended Escuela Libre de Msica de Ponce, now known as the Instituto de Msica Juan Morel Campos, and was inspired by Jes Sánchez Erazo. On May 3, 1963, at the age of sixteen, he moved to New York City.
