Drew Weissman’s career in science and medicine began in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he was born to an Italian mother and a Jewish father. Weissman grew up appreciating and honoring all Jewish holidays in spite of the fact that his mother did not convert to Judaism. He attended Lexington High School, where he received his diploma in 1977.
His academic path brought him to Brandeis University, where he majored in biochemistry and enzymology while working in Gerald Fasman’s lab, and graduated with both a B.A. and an M.A. in 1981. He then continued graduate studies in immunology and microbiology, ultimately earning his M.D. and Ph.D. from Boston University in 1987.
Weissman followed his doctoral studies with a residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During this time, he had the honor of working with Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the time.
During these formative years, Weissman’s interest in immunology and infectious diseases blossomed, eventually leading to his seminal contributions to the field of mRNA vaccines and cementing his place among the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
