The murder of volunteer firefighter Jon Hickey in his home in Upper Fells Point sent shockwaves through the community, and the details of the case are now the subject of Dateline NBC’s true crime exposé, The Killer On Camera 4.
The murderer, Daniel Greene, appeared to lead a normal life on the surface, with a wife and two children, but behind closed doors, he was hiding a dark secret.
Greene had an alleged mistress, Jennifer McKay, with whom he rekindled a romantic relationship while still married.
Despite showing McKay fabricated divorce papers and staging a bachelor pad, Greene’s lies caught up with him. McKay eventually moved on and started dating Jon Hickey, which led to jealousy and obsession on Greene’s part.
On the night of the murder, Greene borrowed a black pickup truck, disabled his phone, and drove to Hickey’s home, where he broke in and shot him while he slept.
Surveillance footage and McKay’s identification were crucial in Greene’s arrest for the murder. His trial spanned years, with multiple postponements and a rejected plea deal.
Ultimately, Greene was found guilty of first-degree murder, home invasion, and firearm use in a felony violent crime.
Despite calls for the death penalty, Greene was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years. As of March 1, 2024, he is serving his sentence at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.
The case is a chilling reminder of how jealousy and obsession can lead to tragic consequences.
