While living without electricity or watches for four years in a Japanese POW camp, Ned learned to tell time by casting the shadow of a shovel handle, which sparked his fascination for sundials. Jenkins-Nye was one of a select few young women, known as “Goucher Girls,” who attended Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, and were recruited by the Navy to assist in deciphering codes used by Japan and Germany.
