Salman Rushdie has been on the news after he was stabbed in the neck as he was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York, US. He is an Indian-born British-American novelist whose work often combines magical realism with historical fiction and primarily deals with connections, disruptions, and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations, set on the Indian subcontinent.

According to authorities, he was stabbed at least once in the neck, and at least once in the abdomen on Friday after an assailant rushed to the stage and lunged at the writer just as he was being introduced to the audience.

His book agent, Andrew Wylie who wrote in an email to the Reuters news agency revealed that “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

He was airlifted to hospital where he spent hours in surgery and  was on a ventilator and unable to speak on Friday evening. He’s being treated at UPMC Hamot in Erie.

Authorities has  identified the suspect as 24-year-old Hadi Matar from New Jersey.
