Usher Raymond IV, born October 14, 1978, is an American R&B singer. He was born in Dallas, Texas, but grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee before moving to Atlanta, Georgia. When he was 12 years old, his mother entered him in local singing competitions, and he got the attention of a music A&R from LaFace Records.
His parents were Jonetta Patton and Usher Raymond III. He spent a large portion of his boyhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. When Usher was a year old, his father abandoned the family. Usher’s mother, stepfather, and half-brother James Lackey reared him.
Usher’s family migrated to Atlanta, Georgia, with the notion that a larger city would give him more possibilities to demonstrate his talents. He went to Atlanta’s North Springs High School.
