Unzué was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in February 2020.
On June 18, one day before the league game between Sevilla and Barcelona in Seville and three days before International ALS/MND Day, he made his condition public at Camp Nou during a special press conference.
There is currently no cure for MND. Unzue said he wished to raise more awareness of the disease.
Unzué added and I quote “I insist I am coping well,” he said. “I feel privileged to be able to have lived the life I have and now I feel privileged about what I will be able to do about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which is a disease that anyone can get.”
