A visual artist, lyricist, and singer of English descent. She previously served as the band Antony and the Johnsons’ main vocalist.
In England’s Chichester, Anohni was born. In 1981, her family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. She relocated to Manhattan, New York, in 1990 to attend the Experimental Theater Wing at New York University. In 1992, she and Johanna Constantine created the performance art collaborative Blacklips.
She began her musical career by playing live shows like Antony and the Johnsons with a group of musicians from New York City. On David Tibet’s label Durtro, their debut record, Antony and the Johnsons, was released in 2000. She won the Mercury Music Prize for their second album, I Am a Bird Now, which was a financial and critical triumph.
