The 9th of October 1969 saw the birth of Polly Jean Harvey in England. Polly Jean, or PJ as she is more commonly known, was raised on a sheep farm in Yeovil, Somerset. Her parents were quarrymen, and her mother was an artist. She was taught how to play numerous instruments as a child, including the violin, guitar, and saxophone, and as a teenager, she participated in several bands.

At age 21, she finally created the band known as “PJ Harvey” with bassist Steve Vaughn and drummer Robert Ellis after much delay and self-doubt regarding her future career (she was torn for a long time between her passion for music and her goal to become either a nurse or a vet.

The newly formed band spent very little money recording their debut EP “Dress,” but the quality of the demos led to their signing with the British independent label Too Pure, which issued the EP in late 1991.

The following spring saw the release of PJ’s debut full-length album, which once again received raving reviews from the music press. That same year, the very reputable Island label in the US released the album.
