Pavel Nedved, a former midfielder for the Czech national team, was born on August 30, 1972.

He is recognized as one of the most accomplished athletes to come out of the Czech Republic, having won both local and European honors with the Italian clubs Lazio and Juventus, notably the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final with Juventus.

Nedved played a significant role in the Czech team’s run to the 1996 Euro final, which garnered him fame on a global scale. He also served as captain of the national team at UEFA Euro 2004, when they lost to eventual champions Greece in the semi-final. Nedved was nominated to the Tournament Team. Additionally, Nedved assisted his team in becoming the first since Czechoslovakia’s dissolution to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Nedved earned the nicknames “The Czech cannon” in English-language media and “Furia Ceca” (Czech Fury) from Italian fans because of his performances and his brisk and spirited runs during games. Because his last name and the Czech word for bear, Medved, are similar, he is known by the moniker Méa (“Little Bear”) in Czech.
