Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, was sentenced to nine extra years in prison on accusations of fraud and contempt of court, in a case that his supporters claim was filed against him on President Vladimir Putin’s orders.

The new sentence comes as Russian authorities try to quell any opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, which has halted in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance. Since the invasion began on Feb. 24, Russian authorities have jailed over 15,000 individuals at anti-war rallies.

After his near-fatal poisoning, a Moscow court sentenced convicted Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny to nine additional years in prison on new accusations of embezzlement and contempt of court, increasing fears among sympathizers that his life may be in danger in a remote colony.

Navalny was found guilty in a makeshift court inside the maximum-security prison in Pokrov, 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Moscow, on Tuesday. Navalny is already serving a 2.5-year sentence for violating parole in the poisoning recovery case.
