June Pointer, who was the youngest of six children born to Reverend Elton and Sarah Pointer, was a singer just like her sisters. She established The Pointers – A Pair with her sister Bonnie in 1969.
The pair performed in various places before later that year when sister Anita left her position as a secretary to join them, they expanded to a trio. The Pointer Sisters became the group’s new name formally.
With the help of Atlantic Records, the trio obtained a record deal and put out a few singles, none of which had a significant influence on the music charts. Sister Ruth joined the group in 1972, forming a quartet. The sisters’ careers soon started to take off after they signed with Blue Thumb Records.
What did June Pointer die of?
I had a stroke on February 27, 2006, said June. She was admitted to the hospital where it was discovered that her cancer had spread to her breast, colon, liver, and bones.
On April 11, 2006, she passed away at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 52.
A family announcement revealed June’s demise “in the arms of her sisters Ruth and Anita and her brothers Aaron and Fritz by her side”.
