Emily Jean Stone was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 6, 1988, to Jeffrey Charles Stone, the founder and CEO of a general contracting firm, and Krista Jean Stone (née Yeager), a homemaker.

At the age of twelve to fifteen, she lived on the grounds of the Camelback Hotel resort. Spencer, her younger brother, is her only sibling.

Conrad Ostberg Sten, her paternal grandfather, was from a Swedish family who anglicized their surname to “Stone” when they immigrated to the United States via Ellis Island. She is also of German, English, Scotch, and Irish descent.

Stone began performing as a child in a theatrical production of The Wind in the Willows in 2000, where he was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She moved to Los Angeles as a youngster and made her television debut in In Search of the New Partridge Family (2004), a reality show that only produced an unsold pilot.
Following tiny television parts, she went on to act in a string of well-received teen comedy films, including Superbad (2007), Zombieland (2009), and Easy A (2010).
