Eugene Lee Yang is an American filmmaker, actor, producer, author, director, activist, and internet celebrity who was born on January 18, 1986. He is best known for being a member of the YouTube group The Try Guys (2014-present) and his work with BuzzFeed (2013–2018). Yang is also well-known for his involvement with various human rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, including The Trevor Project.
Yang spent five years after college doing freelance work producing music videos and writing and filming commercials.
On the recommendation of a colleague who saw his potential in creating short-format videos, he began working for BuzzFeed’s video division in 2013. He was given complete creative control over experimental video productions and the exploration of new modes of storytelling.
Some of his works focused on stereotypes, body issues, and Asian American identity, such as If Disney Princes Were Real, which had over 70 million views, and Women’s Ideal Body Types Throughout History, which had over 40 million views and remained one of Buzzfeed’s most watched videos on YouTube.
“Yang’s videos work because they’re funny-with-a-message riffs on all-American cultural touchstones—like high school vs. college, awkward private moments, and pet ownership,” according to Glamour, “but he’s also not afraid to tackle issues surrounding race—especially when it comes to the Asian American community.”
