Mavis Staples, an American gospel and rhythm and blues singer, actress, and civil rights advocate, was born on July 10, 1939. As a member of her family’s band, The Staple Singers, she achieved renown (she is the last surviving member of that band). She cut the smash songs “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do It Again” while she was a member of the group. Staples recorded her debut solo album under her own name in 1969.
