The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has clarified that they have only received GH¢47.125 million from the government, contrary to the GH¢80 million reported by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh in Parliament on Friday.
According to the Head of Public Relations of WAEC, John Kapi, the GH¢47.125 million was a partial payment of the arrears of GH¢95.83 million that was paid on Friday, June 21, 2024. However, he mentioned that this amount has been processed through the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) and has not yet been translated into real cash.
The uncertainty surrounding the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) arose as WAEC was waiting to recoup almost 98 percent of the GH¢95.83 million needed to organize the examination. WAEC had initially received only about GH¢2.3 million out of the required amount, emphasizing the need for additional funding to facilitate the examination and the processing of results.
The BECE is scheduled to commence on Monday, July 8, and end on Monday, July 15, 2024, at all centers across the country. WAEC stressed the importance of receiving the necessary funds to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination.
It is imperative for the government to address the financial constraints faced by WAEC to avoid any disruptions to the BECE schedule and ensure that students can take their exams without any obstacles.
