The Electoral Commission of Ghana is currently investigating how Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was able to vote in the 2020 elections despite his name not being on the voters register. This revelation came after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused Mr. Ahiagbah of double registration when he tried to register at a Ketu South electoral registration.
According to Mr. Ahiagbah, he went to cast his vote at a polling station but was informed by EC officials that his name was not in the register. However, he was still allowed to vote after an EC official recorded his identification number and other necessary details at the bottom of the register.
In a briefing to Parliament ahead of the 2024 elections, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, expressed concern about the incident and assured the public that investigations are ongoing. She emphasized the need to prevent such occurrences from happening at any polling station in the upcoming general elections.
Mrs. Mensa stated, “Before the elections, we will give you a little update on how that happened.” She also highlighted the importance of ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process, urging all parties to accept the outcome of the elections.
The Electoral Commission is committed to addressing the issue and ensuring that all eligible voters can exercise their democratic right without any irregularities. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
