He grew up in the nearby city of Lynwood, California. Nick Yankovich was the son of Mary Yankovich (née Braj, 1890-1968), who was born in Croatia, and Matthew Yankovich (baptised Matija Jankovi, 1887-1969), who was born in Bedenj, Slovenia.
His father was of Slovene and Croatian heritage and was born in Kansas City’s Strawberry Hill neighbourhood.
