We will not support EC’s proposal to change election date – John Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made it clear that it will not support the proposal to move the 2024 election date from December to November. John Dramani Mahama was the former president.

He insisted, “We [the NDC] do not believe that this is being proposed in good faith.” According to Alberto Mario Noretti of Graphic Online, the NDC flag bearer was speaking at the start of a minority caucus meeting in Ho on Saturday, February 10.

According to Mr. Mahama, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had started plotting to taint the legitimacy of the elections because it was certain it would lose. One such plot point was the Electoral Commission’s abrupt interest in moving the election date from December 7 to November 7, even though it had not yet shown that it was prepared to hold general elections.

Mr. Mahama stated that the District Assembly elections in December of last year served as a stark example of the commission’s lack of readiness, with minor errors and startling logistical breakdowns revealing that the body was ill-equipped to handle election management.

“Everything suggests that the NDC will win big in the 2024 elections and that the Ghanaian people will clearly reject the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government, which they have imposed extremely bad governance on,” Mr. Mahama continued.

Furthermore, he said, the NPP is searching for dishonest ways to rig the elections in their favor because corruption, poor management, nepotism, conceit, incapacity, and the gleeful waste of public funds by this administration are all expected to end at the polls later this year.
