A member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called for an independent body to investigate a shooting incident that occurred at Tema Kplejoo.
The incident, which took place on the final night of the Kplejoo celebration in Tema New Town, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with three others currently receiving medical treatment at the Tema General Hospital.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Toobu emphasized the importance of the military taking action to prevent future instances of military brutality. He highlighted the evolving nature of the military and the proximity of military barracks to residential areas as factors that require careful consideration.
Mr. Toobu stressed the need for a detailed investigation, including access to the autopsy report to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths. He emphasized the importance of proportionate use of force by the military, highlighting the significance of warning shots that are non-fatal and acting within the confines of the law when necessary.
The Wa West MP underscored the gravity of using weapons as a last resort and the critical questions that should be considered before resorting to lethal force. He pointed out that youth unemployment poses a significant security threat, urging caution and non-violent approaches in dealing with situations involving young people.
Authorities are still investigating the shooting incident, with Mr. Toobu’s call for an independent body to conduct a thorough inquiry gaining traction.
