South Dayi Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor is calling for a total audit of the IT system at the Electoral Commission (EC), stating that the commission’s inability to account for lost BVDs and Laptops is criminal.

This call for an audit comes after the National Chairman of his party, Johnson Asioedu Nketiah, also expressed concerns about the EC’s IT system.

Both Mr. Asiedu Nketia and Mr. Dafeamekpor are advocating for an independent audit of the EC’s IT systems to address any doubts and ensure transparency.

Mr. Dafeamekpor highlighted the fact that the EC claimed the missing machines have trackers, raising questions about why they cannot be located.

Despite these concerns, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in Charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has assured the public that the theft of laptops will not impact the integrity of the 2024 elections.

Dr. Asare explained that the missing laptops are separate from the Commission’s Registration Data Systems and are incapable of manipulating election outcomes. He emphasized that the stolen laptops cannot be used for voter verification or registration, as they require specific activation to function.

Dr. Asare also clarified that all data captured during registration exercises are erased from the laptops in a process called ‘End of Life’, ensuring that no sensitive information is compromised. The Commission is actively working with security agencies to investigate the theft and apprehend the suspects.

The Electoral Commission is committed to upholding transparency and integrity in its operations and elections, urging public figures and citizens to verify information before dissemination.

The Commission remains confident in its readiness for the upcoming elections and continues to rely on the police and other security measures to protect its installations.
