The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, has raised concerns about the structure of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). Speaking at a discussion on pension reforms, she emphasized the need for a review of SSNIT’s operations to ensure that workers receive adequate benefits from their investments.
Ofori-Ampofo highlighted the disparity between SSNIT and private pension schemes, noting that private schemes have assets totaling 38 billion cedis compared to SSNIT’s 18 billion. This discrepancy, she stated, indicates a significant issue that must be addressed.
Addressing the importance of pensions for nurses and midwives, Ofori-Ampofo urged all workers to take their pension savings seriously. She emphasized the critical role of SSNIT in securing the future of retirees, especially as they may face health challenges in their old age.
As the discussion on pension reforms continues, it is evident that there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of pension funds to ensure that workers receive the benefits they deserve. Ofori-Ampofo’s call for a review of SSNIT’s structure is a step towards improving the pension system and securing the financial future of all workers.
